Samurai Shodown IV: Amakusa’s Revenge, known as Samurai Spirits: Amakusa Descent
in Japan, is the fourth series logo Samurai Showdown SNK fighting game.
Chronologically, it is the second and final chapter of an interquel
between Samurai Shodown and Samurai Shodown II, Samurai Shodown III being the first chapter.
After Samurai Shodown III got mostly
negative reviews from the community of fighting games, SNK again
addressing complaints, and tried to offer track which is expected to
regain some of the magic that had made Samurai Shodown II such a
success.
The most obvious change is visual, with
color palettes dramatically adjusted for individual characteristics, in
general, clear up and reducing contrast, in the attempt to make the game
more. Air blockade was completely removed, and the switch-around move,
allowing a player to quickly switch behind the other’s back, and the
Dodge (Evasion; side- step), in which the movement virtually environment
brings a semi-3D for the defense in an attempt to use each sword more
effectively.
Overall, the game plays like SS3, but
the overall feeling is different. Control has been loosened and more
accurately modified, controller movements have improved, the total
damage is reduced and you cannot upload his / her own POW gauge. The
delivery man off screen was omitted entirely from the game. The biggest
addition is probably the “CD Combo,” in which a player can press the C
and D buttons together, triggering a strike that can be followed by a
sequence of button touches. The single player mode now has a timer, too.
As you reach the end boss in a specified period of time you can see the
end of a character.
In a paradoxical move slightly when
compared to the brighter aesthetic, SNK also added in a movement of
“suicide” (known in English-speaking circles of fans as the “Honorable
Death”), in which one character sacrifices his / her own life, thus
losing the round. The advantage of this is that one who commits suicide
the next round will begin with a full meter of war prisoners. Certain
finishes also allow a movement “doom” in the vein of Mortal Kombat. This feature has been hotly debated for its violent nature.
